Recognizing and understanding mold illness is your first step to becoming well. Because mold mycotoxins attack your immune system, they can make you susceptible to many other chronic illnesses, and ultimately be the true root cause of countless other health issues, from allergies to thyroid issues to cancer. So let’s dive in and begin determining if mold illness, or CIRS, could be the cause of your mysterious chronic symptoms.
How Mold Illness And Mycotoxins Show Up In Your Body
Mold illness or toxicity is not the same as mold allergies. Many different species of mold exist both indoors and out. With mold allergies, you will experience acute (short-term) symptoms such as sneezing, coughing or watering eyes.
However, several molds, such as Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold) and Memnoniella, produce toxic particles called mycotoxins in your home or work environments.
Now when healthy, your body will naturally remove molds and mycotoxins. But when your body is not properly getting rid of the mold mycotoxins, they can begin attacking your body, resulting in mold illness, also known as Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS).
With mold illness, you may experience various symptoms and your damaged areas can become a gateway to other chronic issues such as Lyme disease, thyroid disorders, and even Alzheimer’s. In fact, 33% of Alzheimer’s cases have been linked to previous mold exposure. What’s scary is that your body could be failing to detox the mycotoxins and suffer a lot of damage without you even noticing.
In fact, all of my life, I struggled with poor health. I didn’t know what was wrong and when I found out it all stemmed from mold mycotoxin exposure, there wasn’t much information about how to get well. I had no roadmap and felt lost in my own body.
Most of my life, I had constipation or diarrhea and constantly had to pee, with bouts of incontinence (inability to hold in pee). During puberty, I spent a year throwing up once a month. When I was pregnant, my skin and eyes became yellow. I have had really itchy skin and bumps similar to hives as well as acid reflux. I have endured much pain near my kidneys and liver. At my worst, I was so tired and weak that I had many times I crawled back to bed from going to the bathroom (my house was only 700 square feet).
My symptom list goes on because mold illness is a multi-system, multi-symptom syndrome. What’s most challenging is that many of the symptoms of mold illness can be mistakenly attributed to other factors, such as allergies, sensitivities, autoimmune diseases, and more.
Your body was made to detox from mold, but when you pile up all the toxic elements – heavy metals, pesticides, plastics, and other mycotoxins, your system can get clogged up. This is why you hear in holistic wellness that peeling back the layers and healing take time – it’s likely that many toxins are contributing to your poor health.
Add to this the mental fog and exhaustion caused by mold – it’s no wonder you can feel hopeless and lost. But not anymore. I’m here to help – with a roadmap to detoxing and recovering from mold!
Why Mold Illness Can Keep You Stuck at Being Sick
Your body’s detoxification system is like a city with a vast network of drains and underground pipes that can get clogged up with debris – metals, pesticides, plastics, and mold, or other mycotoxins. When your system is clogged up, nothing drains out and a myriad of symptoms can surface.
Your intestinal system, liver, kidneys, lymphatic system, skin, and lungs are all part of your detox system, and all need to be working well. To work well, your system needs adequate energy. When not functioning properly, the clogged toxins can flood your muscles, joints, brain, and other parts of your body, including your mitochondria.
Your mitochondria help generate the energy needed to detox from mold and other toxins and are critical to your healing. If your mitochondria are getting overrun by toxins, you can develop a myriad of symptoms often thought to be caused by something else.
You see, your overall health is extremely dependent on your mitochondria and your body’s capacity to drain and remove toxins. When your detox pathways are open, your body can properly remove toxins without making you sick! Counter to what you may hear, this means you should be pooping 2 times per day.
If you aren’t pooping that regularly and are experiencing chronic symptoms, continue reading so you can investigate whether mold illness could be your root cause – and new hope for true healing.
This is the first blog post of your roadmap from mold and mycotoxin illness to getting your brain and purpose back in life. Once you recognize and understand how mold illness (CIRS) can show up so mysteriously, and damage so many parts of your body, you can better determine whether mold is your cause, which I cover in Detox from Mold Mycotoxins Part 2.
